• Your summer skin and hair care guide — how to keep your routine working when the heat is on

June 29, 2022

Summer is one of the most joyful seasons — and one of the most demanding on your skin and hair. Rising temperatures, intense UV exposure, humidity, sweat and pollution all change the way your skin behaves, the way your pores function and the way your hair responds.

The good news is that with a few thoughtful adjustments to your routine, your skin can thrive in summer rather than simply survive it. As a certified health coach and clean beauty expert, here is my complete guide to keeping your skin clear, protected and radiant all season long — from the inside out.

Why summer calls for a different approach

In cooler months we focus on nourishment, richness and barrier repair. Summer demands almost the opposite — lightness, protection, purification and sweat-proof resilience.

The main challenges summer presents to your skin are:

Heat and humidity — cause increased sebum production, enlarged-looking pores and a higher likelihood of congestion and breakouts, even in skin types that are not normally acne-prone.

Increased UV exposure — the most significant skin ageing and damage factor, which we address first and foremost with daily mineral SPF.

Sweat and pollution — accumulate on the skin's surface throughout the day, mixing with sunscreen residue to clog pores if not removed thoroughly each evening.

Sun and salt exposure for hair — strip moisture, fade colour and cause structural damage to the hair shaft over time.

Each of these has a straightforward solution — and none of them requires a complicated or expensive routine.

1. Sun protection — your most important summer product

If you do nothing else differently in summer, wear a broad spectrum mineral SPF every single morning. This is non-negotiable from both a clean beauty and a naturopathic health perspective.

Choose a mineral sunscreen with zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide as the sole active ingredients. These sit on the surface of the skin rather than absorbing into the bloodstream, making them the safest and most skin-friendly option — particularly in a season when you are applying SPF daily, often over large areas of skin and body.

In hot and humid weather, a lightweight mineral SPF moisturiser used as your sole daytime product is often all you need. Heavy layers of multiple products in summer heat can congest pores and feel uncomfortable. Simplify and let your SPF do the work.

Reapply every two hours when outdoors, and immediately after swimming or sweating. No sunscreen provides all-day protection from a single morning application — reapplication is the single most important SPF habit most people overlook.

Physical protection matters equally. A wide-brimmed hat, UV-protective sunglasses and avoiding direct sun during peak hours — 10am to 4pm, particularly in the Middle East where UV indices are extreme — are as important as your topical SPF.

2. Pore care and detoxification

Summer is the season when pores are most challenged. Heat stimulates sebum production, humidity prevents natural evaporation from the skin's surface, and SPF and pollution accumulate throughout the day. The result for most skin types — regardless of whether they are normally oily or dry — is increased congestion, potential breakouts and pores that appear larger.

A weekly deep-cleansing purifying mask becomes essential in summer rather than optional. Look for formulations containing:

Pink clay — draws out impurities and absorbs excess oil without stripping the skin.

BHA (beta hydroxy acid, typically salicylic acid) — oil-soluble and able to penetrate into the pore lining to dissolve congestion from within.

Probiotics — help maintain the skin's microbiome balance, which is particularly important when skin is under stress from heat and environmental exposure.

From a naturopathic perspective, keeping the skin's microbiome healthy during summer is as important as any topical treatment. Internal support through probiotic-rich foods — live yoghurt, kefir, kimchi and sauerkraut — supports both gut and skin health simultaneously. The gut-skin connection means that what is happening internally will always show up externally. We explore this in depth in our guide to the skin-gut connection.

3. Your evening cleanse — the most important step of your summer routine

This cannot be overstated: in summer, your evening cleanse is the most critical step in your entire routine. A full day of mineral SPF, sweat, humidity, pollution and urban grime sitting on your skin overnight is one of the fastest routes to breakouts, dullness and congested pores.

A double cleanse is essential in summer — every evening without exception.

Step one — oil-based cleanser or cleansing balm. Despite the instinct to avoid oil in summer, an oil-based first cleanse is the most effective way to dissolve mineral SPF, which is designed to be water-resistant and will not come off fully with a water-based cleanser alone. Oil dissolves oil — this is chemistry, not complexity.

Step two — gentle foaming or gel cleanser. Look for one made with natural surfactants rather than sulphates, which can strip the skin's barrier. Anti-bacterial botanical ingredients — tea tree, neem, willow bark — are beneficial additions for summer skin prone to congestion.

If you have combination or oily skin, your foaming cleanser can be used both morning and evening. If you have dry skin, use it in the evening and a more hydrating cream-based cleanser in the morning when there is less to remove.

In summer, incorporating a deep-cleansing detoxifying mask once a week helps purge congestion caused by daily sunscreen buildup.

4. Hair protection in summer

Hair is often the most overlooked casualty of summer. UV radiation damages the hair's protein structure, fading colour and causing brittleness and breakage. Salt water and chlorine strip the hair's natural moisture balance. Humidity causes the hair cuticle to swell unevenly, resulting in frizz and loss of smoothness.

Protect your hair before sun, sea and pool exposure with a UV-protective leave-in treatment or spray. Look for lightweight formulations that combine UV filtration with hydration and frizz control — ones that absorb quickly and work on all hair types are the most practical for summer use.

For intensive summer hair care, a weekly nourishing hair mask replenishes the moisture and protein bonds that sun and salt strip away. Ingredients to look for:

Plant-based oils (argan, jojoba, marula) — deeply nourishing and restorative for dry, sun-damaged hair.

Amino acids — rebuild the hair's structural integrity from within.

Panthenol (vitamin B5) — penetrates the hair shaft and repairs from within.

From a naturopathic perspective, hair health is also deeply connected to nutrition. Adequate protein intake, zinc, biotin, iron and omega-3 fatty acids are all essential for strong resilient hair. Eggs, oily fish, nuts, seeds and leafy greens are all excellent natural sources.

5. Body care — exfoliation and hydration

The body deserves as much attention as the face in summer — particularly if you want that healthy luminous summer glow that comes from genuinely well-cared-for skin.

Regular body exfoliation is the foundation. Removing dead skin cells allows body moisturiser to absorb properly, gives the skin a smoother texture and results in a more even longer-lasting tan. Aim to exfoliate one to two times per week. Look for body scrubs that combine physical exfoliation with nourishing ingredients like honey, hyaluronic acid or plant oils — so the process both removes and nourishes rather than simply stripping.

Follow every scrub immediately with a body moisturiser while the skin is still slightly damp — this is when absorption is at its highest. In summer a lightweight lotion mist or fast-absorbing milk is often more comfortable than a heavy body butter. Look for humectant ingredients — hyaluronic acid, glycerin, aloe vera — that attract and retain moisture without feeling heavy in the heat.

From the inside, body skin hydration is directly linked to water intake. In summer, particularly in hot climates, dehydration happens faster than most people realise. Aim for a minimum of two litres of water daily, more if you are sweating heavily or spending time outdoors. Adding electrolytes — through coconut water, mineral-rich foods or a clean electrolyte supplement — helps the body actually retain the water you are drinking.

A final note on simplifying in summer

One of the most common summer skincare mistakes is continuing a rich layered winter routine in summer heat and wondering why skin suddenly feels congested or looks dull. Summer is nature's invitation to simplify.

Fewer products, lighter textures, more focus on cleansing and protection. Less is genuinely more when the temperature rises — and a simplified well-chosen routine often delivers better results than a complicated one.

This philosophy of simplicity and intention is at the heart of how I approach skincare at every season. Your skin does not need more products. It needs the right ones — chosen for where you are, the season you are in and what your body needs right now.
