  • Skincare 101 AHA and BHA

July 16, 2022

Everyone is talking about AHAs & BHAs. What are they?

AHA and BHA are the shortened terms for Alpha Hydroxy acid and Beta Hydroxy acid. Any beauty affectionadas will tell you that acids are essential ingredients to keep your skin glowing all year long. They can be of natural or synthetic sources. We are talking here about natural AHAs and BHAs of course. Although both belong to the acids family, AHAs and BHAs have slightly different functions. AHAs will work on the surface of your skin to remove dead cells that are glued on the epidermis (the surface layer of your skin) which are not easily removed with your daily cleanser while BHA will penetrate deep into your pores to clean out excess oil and sebum. The result is a resurfaced fresh and glowing skin with refined pores and smooth texture.

AHAs. Include glycolic acid, lactic acid, citric acid, malic acid, and tartaric acid. They can be natural or synthetic. At Lynn's Apothecary we carry ONLY natural AHAs in our products. Some examples of natural AHA sources: sugarcane, sugar maple, oranges, lemons, grapefruits, pineapple. While improving skin cell turnover AHAs will also help stimulate collagen production so improving firmness and elasticity. AHAs will also play a role in enhancing moisture retention. Overall they are a key ingredient in your routine for a more radiant, fresh and bright complexion! AHAs can be found in cleansers, exfoliators, serums, masks and moisturisers.

BHA. Synonymous with salicylic acid. This acid is oil-soluble which means it can penetrate deep into the pores and deeply cleanse excess oils and sebum. Once delivered from this excess oiliness your pores will appear smaller and cleared, free from blackheads. It is a major ingredient if you want to prevent breakouts and fight acne! The natural sources of salicylic acid commonly found in our clean brands are sourced from organic willow bark and pomegranate.

Whether you are looking for a brighter, smoother, younger looking skin or you are in a search for ingredients to clear out your breakouts and refine your pores size; AHAs and BHAs are important ingredients to integrate into your skincare routine
