• What raw Manuka honey can do for your skin — and why it belongs in your routine

July 29, 2020

If you follow a holistic approach to health, you're probably already familiar with Manuka honey as a wellness staple — taken by the spoonful for its immune-supporting and antimicrobial properties. But what many people don't realise is that this extraordinary ingredient is just as powerful applied to the skin as it is consumed internally.

As someone who approaches skin health from both a naturopathic and clean beauty perspective, Manuka honey is one of the ingredients I return to again and again — both in practice and in my own routine. Here's everything you need to know about it.

What is Manuka honey — and what makes it different?

Manuka honey is a monofloral honey extracted from the nectar of the Manuka plant (Leptospermum scoparium), a flowering shrub native to New Zealand and parts of Australia. What sets it apart from regular honey is a compound called methylglyoxal (MGO) — a naturally occurring antibacterial agent found in high concentrations in Manuka nectar that gives it its remarkable therapeutic potency.

Not all Manuka honey is equal. To be truly effective — whether consumed or applied topically — look for:

  • MGO of 250 or above — this indicates meaningful antibacterial activity
  • UMF (Unique Manuka Factor) of 15 or higher — UMF is an independent quality certification that measures the honey's overall potency, including its MGO content, DHA levels and leptosperin markers
  • Raw and unpasteurised — heat processing destroys many of the active compounds. Raw Manuka honey retains its full spectrum of enzymes, vitamins and antimicrobial properties
  • Sourced from New Zealand — the highest grades come from dedicated apiaries in New Zealand's pristine natural environment

The naturopathic principle of using food as medicine applies beautifully here — what nourishes the body from within can often heal the skin from without.

The skin benefits of raw Manuka honey

1. Heals and calms inflammatory skin conditions

This is where Manuka honey truly shines. Its potent antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties make it one of the most effective natural treatments for inflammatory skin conditions including acne, eczema, rosacea and psoriasis.

When applied topically, it soothes redness, reduces swelling and supports the skin's natural healing process — without the side effects associated with topical antibiotics or steroid creams. From a naturopathic perspective, this is significant: we are supporting the skin's own intelligence rather than suppressing its symptoms.

2. Kills acne-causing bacteria

The high MGO content of Manuka honey has been shown in multiple studies to be effective against Cutibacterium acnes — the bacteria primarily responsible for acne breakouts. Unlike conventional acne treatments that often strip and irritate the skin, Manuka honey addresses the bacterial cause while simultaneously nourishing and hydrating.

This makes it particularly valuable for sensitive or compromised skin that cannot tolerate harsher acne treatments.

3. Delivers essential nutrients directly to the skin

Raw Manuka honey is extraordinarily rich in skin-nourishing compounds — vitamins B and C, minerals including zinc, copper, iron, potassium and selenium, and a full spectrum of amino acids. These are the same nutrients we prioritise in naturopathic nutrition for skin health, but applied topically they can be absorbed directly by the skin cells.

Zinc in particular is worth highlighting — it is one of the most important minerals for skin healing and sebum regulation, and is frequently deficient in people with acne-prone skin.

4. Hydrates deeply as a natural humectant

Honey is one of nature's most effective humectants — meaning it draws moisture from the environment into the skin and helps retain it there. Its high natural sugar content creates a hygroscopic effect that keeps skin plump, soft and hydrated.

This property also makes it exceptionally beneficial for wound healing and post-procedure skin recovery, as adequate hydration is essential for the cellular repair process.

5. Gently exfoliates and brightens

The naturally low pH of Manuka honey combined with its enzymatic content means it gently dissolves the bonds between dead skin cells — a mild but effective form of chemical exfoliation. Regular use can result in a brighter, more even skin tone and over time can help fade acne scars, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and age spots.

This is a gentle, food-based alternative to synthetic AHAs that is suitable even for the most reactive and sensitised skin.

Manuka honey from the inside out

From a naturopathic health coaching perspective, the most powerful way to work with Manuka honey is to use it both internally and externally as part of an integrated approach to skin health.

Taken internally, a teaspoon of high-grade raw Manuka honey (MGO 250+ / UMF 15+) daily supports gut health, reduces systemic inflammation and strengthens immune function — all of which have a direct and measurable impact on skin clarity and resilience. The gut-skin connection means that reducing internal inflammation through diet and nutrition is one of the most effective long-term strategies for inflammatory skin conditions. (We explore this in depth in our guide to the skin-gut connection.)

Applied topically, it can be used as a face mask, a spot treatment, a gentle cleanser or a soothing compress for irritated or compromised skin.

How to use Manuka honey in your skincare routine

As a weekly mask: Apply a thin layer of raw Manuka honey (MGO 250+ / UMF 15+) to clean, dry skin. Leave for 15–20 minutes then rinse with warm water. Use once or twice weekly for brightening, hydration and congestion.

As a spot treatment: Apply a small amount directly to active breakouts or inflamed areas. Leave overnight if possible, covered with a small patch to prevent transfer. The antibacterial and anti-inflammatory action works most effectively with prolonged contact.

As a gentle cleanser: Warm a small amount between your palms and massage gently onto damp skin in circular motions. Rinse thoroughly. This is particularly effective for acne-prone, sensitive or rosacea-prone skin as it cleanses without stripping.

As a soothing compress: Mix with a small amount of warm water and apply to irritated, red or eczema-affected areas using a soft cloth. The anti-inflammatory action provides immediate soothing relief.

A note on sourcing: for topical use, always choose food-grade raw Manuka honey with verified MGO and UMF ratings. Processed or blended honey products will not deliver the same therapeutic results.

A word on the naturopathic approach to skin ingredients

One of the principles I come back to again and again in my work with clients is this: the most effective skincare ingredients are often the ones that the body already recognises. Manuka honey is a perfect example — a whole food ingredient with a complete, complex nutritional profile that works synergistically with the skin rather than forcing a result.

In naturopathic medicine we look for ingredients that support the body's innate healing capacity. Manuka honey does exactly that — it provides an environment in which the skin can heal itself.
